I sat there, frozen.
Not crying, not…sad either. I didn’t have words to explain it. I just knew— It. Was. Big.
It was July of 2020, and the credits were rolling on Disclosure–a Netflix documentary by Laverne Cox about trans representation in the media. Everyone featured was trans.
And until this moment, I didn’t think I was.
For a reason I still don’t fully understand, this documentary was the last straw for my denial, thrusting me out of my hiding place of 32 years.
But I was stuck on the threshold of what was coming next.
I’m not the “embracing the unknown" guy. I’m an intellectualizer all the way.
So my awakening to gender freedom didn’t have Mary Oliver “I finally knew what I had to do and began” energy.
It was giving “cling to the door frame, the floor is lava and we’re all gonna die” energy.
The moment I chose to explore the idea of transition, it wasn’t like a lightning bolt of clarity, or instant certainty.
It was the biggest leap of faith I’d ever taken.
But this wordless knowing leaving me frozen on that couch was telling me so clearly that I had to take a leap, because the foundation was crumbling where I stood.
After almost 5 years, what I can tell you is that these moments of gut intuition that propel us towards our destinies aren’t unique to trans stories. They happen to all of us. Though our culture tries pretty hard to obscure these indigenous ways of knowing from our view.
My journey opened me up to a broader epistemology about being human, and finding our own right-sized places in the nature of things.
And that’s what I want to share with you.
Trans affirming care is about more than getting pronouns right, or learning what the latest terms are. Those things aren’t NOT important, they’re just not really the point.
Deep, inspirational learning about gender diversity has the power to not only propel your practice forward, but also to radically shift your paradigms about healing and humanity.
I took a leap based on a wordless feeling, and it thrust me into a life of deeper truth, engagement, and connection with the world around me.
I guarantee that if you join me in deepening your understanding about gender, it’ll thrust you into truth, inner alignment, and deep connection, too.
You don’t have to be trans to be transformed.
Cut back to the couch.
Sigh…
This is gonna have to be a whole THING now, isn’t it?
